Kevin Foote, the Junior Springboks' head coach, commended his team's offensive efforts in their recent victory over Wales, but highlighted the need for improvements in defense and ball handling before their upcoming semifinal match against England. The team demonstrated resilience in their last Pool A game at the Junior World Championship, securing a semifinal spot after a challenging match that ended with a score of 52-33, turning around a 14-0 deficit in the first 11 minutes.
The match, held in Tbilisi, saw the South Africans pushed by a determined Welsh team. Despite the initial setback, the Junior Boks managed to regain control and dominate the game. "We were a little bit passive in the beginning," Foote admitted. "But once we got into the game and built some momentum, I thought we created some really good try-scoring opportunities."
"There was a lot of attacking intent and the players showed good composure to take control of the match,"
Foote remarked, praising the team's ability to overcome the early challenge. The forward pack was particularly effective, providing the necessary support to turn the game around. "There were a couple of scrum penalties against us, but overall, I thought the pack did really well. They worked hard throughout the game, gave us good front-foot ball and helped us get the result over the line."However, Foote acknowledged areas needing attention before their next game. "From a defensive perspective and in terms of ball retention, there are definitely things we need to work on," he stated. The team plans to review the game thoroughly to prepare for the semifinals. "We'll look closely at some of the turnovers and make sure we're sharper going into the semis," he added.
Having navigated the pool stages successfully, the team now focuses on the semifinals, drawing on their previous experiences in knockout stages of the tournament. "Some of these players have experienced knockout rugby at this tournament before, so we’ll draw on that experience and look forward to the challenge ahead," Foote concluded.
The semifinals are set for the following Monday at Avchala Stadium, with the Junior Boks scheduled to face England at 6:30 pm, following the New Zealand versus France match at 4 pm.
