SA Rugby's high performance general manager, Dave Wessels, recently praised the influence of the Springboks on the Junior Boks' championship success. The U20 team landed back in South Africa after winning their title in Georgia. That same weekend, former Junior Boks Vusi Moyo and Jaco Williams debuted in a Test against Wales.
The impact of the Springboks on the rising talents is substantial, says Wessels. During a press conference at OR Tambo airport, he highlighted the standards set by the national team.
"The Springboks deserve credit for everything that’s happening here. They have set such a high standard for everybody, and every team underneath them is trying to emulate them."
Wessels also touched on the integration between the teams, pointing out the ongoing communication and shared strategies that enhance performance.
"They spend a lot of time with us. We talk to guys like [Bok defence coach] Felix Jones daily about what’s happening in their environment and ours. There’s a real synergy, and it takes a lot of effort from their side," he elaborated.
Under the guidance of coach Kevin Foote, the Junior Boks are not just honing their rugby skills but also absorbing the culture of the Springboks. Wessels emphasized the importance of this cultural integration in player development.
"It’s not only about the rugby stuff," Wessels noted. "There’s something about the way you carry yourself as a Springbok, the way you prepare and all of that soft stuff that takes a little more time, especially with younger men."
Instilling these values, according to Wessels, is key to the seamless transition players like Williams experience when stepping up to the Springboks.
"So the rugby stuff is the easy part. It’s the culture of being a Springbok that we are trying to embed in the players. Coach Foote and his coaches do a great job with that," Wessels concluded.
This successful integration is evident as fresh talents like Jaco Williams adapt quickly and perform confidently on the international stage. The groundwork laid by their predecessors and the ongoing mentorship from current Springboks create an environment ripe for success.
