In a clash that could only be described as epic, Coach Kevin Foote praised his Junior Springboks for a defensive masterclass that saw them overpower New Zealand's Baby Blacks, claiming the World Rugby U20 Championship title in Rovigo, Italy. It’s been a long wait—13 years since their last triumph—and the Boks made sure it was a comeback worth the wait, edging out their rivals 23-15 on a steamy Saturday night.

Coach Foote couldn't hide his admiration for his team's gritty performance. "Defence is all about character, and there were moments when New Zealand were right on our line, but we held firm," he explained, a hint of pride in his voice.

"From a coach’s perspective, you can’t ask for more than that. It was a real South African defensive effort and gees that won it for us today."

The victory wasn’t just another trophy in the cabinet; it marked a clean sweep for Foote’s squad, who remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, echoing the glory of the class of 2012. Foote, who stepped into the coaching role at the tail end of last year, was visibly moved by his team's spirit and unity. "I looked at the players on the field and saw their body language—they were so present and in the moment. They had such belief, and I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved here in Italy," he said.

"I love our country and the Springboks, and I love working with this age group," Foote continued. "To see these young men grow from training in December to what they’ve achieved now is amazing. Being on this journey with them has been incredibly special, and I’ll never take it for granted."

Captain Riley Norton spoke of the physical and mental challenges the team faced in the humid Italian summer. "The ball was so slippery, and your fundamentals had to be spot on in these conditions," Norton described. "There were a few handling errors due to the incredible humidity, and our jerseys were absolutely drenched in sweat, but I think we handled the conditions well."

"This win is for everyone who supported us back home."

The victorious Junior Springboks are set to touch down in Johannesburg on Monday morning, carrying not just the trophy but also newfound respect and admiration, ready to reintegrate into their provincial unions, champions in tow.
