As the Springboks brace for their upcoming clash against the Wallabies, the absence of Cheslin Kolbe due to a knee injury has been a major talking point. Initially feared to be a significant setback, Rassie Erasmus, the team's head coach, has now confirmed that the situation is under control, with Kolbe expected to return fully fit next week. Stepping into Kolbe's giant shoes is Edwill van der Merwe, tasked with a vital role in a game that promises to be an aerial dogfight.
"Cheslin will be ready next week. He had a knee scan and initially, we thought it was a little bit more serious, but he was actually clear to play this weekend," Erasmus disclosed, choosing caution over risk. "We thought next week just to be safe, we want to make sure he's 100% fit."
Van der Merwe, who showcased his prowess in recent games against Italy and Georgia, will now face off against the Wallabies’ Dylan Pietsch, a formidable opponent who impressed in his outing against the British and Irish Lions. With the kick-chase game highlighted by Erasmus as crucial, Van der Merwe's performance could be decisive.
"At altitude the ball flies a mile so distance kicking will be a thing. Also, they’ve got great guys in the air; you know [Joseph] Suaalii, the young boy [Max] Jorgensen, the other winger (Dylan Pietsch) is a really fiery winger who is really competitive."
Another dimension to the Springboks' strategy is their kicking game, especially given that Manie Libbok, the team's primary goal-kicker, has had his share of struggles at Test level. Erasmus remains optimistic, with Aphelele Fassi and Damian Willemse ready as backup. "Damian and Aphelele will be back-up kickers but we’re very confident in Manie. We always say hopefully the game doesn’t come down to kicking and instead comes down to scoring tries," he explained.
