Rassie Erasmus, the mastermind behind the Springboks' strategies, has once again stirred the pot with his recent team selections for the upcoming clash against Australia in the Rugby Championship at Ellis Park. Topping the chatter is Siya Kolisi's intriguing role shift to No 8 and Manie Libbok seizing the flyhalf jersey.
Erasmus opened up about the tactical pivot involving Kolisi. "We actually changed our mind there," he confessed. The positional tweak is subtle yet significant, with Kolisi primarily playing at No 8 during scrums—an occurrence limited to about 13 or 14 times per game. “The more we practised and prepared, we realized the only time Siya really plays at eight is during scrums,” Erasmus detailed during the team announcement in Sandton.
The rationale behind this move is layered. With the formidable trio of Pieter-Steph Du Toit, Marco Van Staden, and Kolisi on the field, the Boks aim to counter Australia's formidable presence at the breakdown. "Australia is a huge threat at the breakdown – they bind hard – and all three of those guys are really strong there,” Erasmus explained.
Choosing Libbok over the likes of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Handre Pollard at flyhalf is another strategic decision aimed at managing player workloads throughout the tournament. This approach hints at a rotation policy that could see different players stepping up in the second Test in Cape Town.
"It's a settled team with enough youth in there to step it up a bit."
Erasmus's early team announcement, a break from the norm, was strategic to quell speculation and allow the team to focus on training. “We’ve been preparing for Australia for three weeks, which isn’t normal. Usually, it’s closer to the Test after the incoming series. The early announcement is to clear up speculation – the team already knows who's playing,” he added.
Flexibility in player roles and unexpected shifts in strategy could still be on the cards, depending on how Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt structures his team. “If they go 6-2, we might bring RG [Snyman] back. But if it stays 5-3, this is our team. This is just about focusing on training now,” Erasmus concluded, leaving fans and foes alike pondering what's next from his tactical playbook.
