The rugby landscape is set to witness a fascinating tactical shift this weekend as Leicester Fainga’anuku, traditionally an All Blacks backliner, prepares to start at openside flanker for the Crusaders in their upcoming Super Rugby Pacific clash. This bold move by coach Rob Penney could redefine Fainga’anuku's role and potentially offer a new dynamic to the Crusaders' pack.

Israel Dagg, the seasoned All Blacks veteran, shared his insights on the transition, suggesting that the Waratahs will be eager to test Fainga’anuku in his new role. “Leicester’s had to transition from doing all the fancy stuff in the backline to joining the forwards – it’s a whole different world there,” Dagg commented on the Sport Nation’s Scotty and Izzy show.

The decision to shift Fainga’anuku to the forwards isn’t a spur-of-the-moment idea. His time at Toulon saw him occasionally slot into the back-row, hinting at his versatility. “This isn’t the first time he’s jumped into the forwards, and there’s a real emphasis this week at the breakdown, a lot of pressure on Leicester in that position,” Dagg added, underscoring the strategic thinking behind this move.

“Obviously very good over the ball, at the breakdown – that’s probably where they’ve seen a lot of success,”

The Crusaders have faced challenges at the breakdown this season, and it’s clear that Penney is looking to Fainga’anuku to turn the tide. His physicality and prowess in contact areas might just be the key to enhancing their performance. “Teams have been playing at pace and that is probably a flow-on to why they’ve leaked so many points,” explained Dagg.

However, adapting to the forwards will require Fainga’anuku to master new skills and positional nuances. From lineout strategies to scrum responsibilities, his role will be pivotal. Dagg points out, “We know that he’s not going to be lifted so basically where does he fit into that puzzle?” This question will be crucial in determining how effectively Fainga’anuku integrates into his new position.

Despite the potential challenges, Dagg remains optimistic about Fainga’anuku's ability to adapt and thrive. “Is he capable? Yeah, I think he’s capable to go out there and perform. I think there will be some special plays that will be revolved around Leicester Fainga’anuku, whether that’s off the lineout or a scrum,” he affirmed.

As the game approaches, the rugby community will be watching closely to see how this strategic gamble plays out. Fainga’anuku’s performance could not only influence the match's outcome but also set a precedent for player versatility in rugby union.
