The clash between the Cheetahs and Pumas in Bloemfontein was supposed to be a showcase of rugby prowess, but instead, lightning took the spotlight, forcing an abrupt end to the SA Cup encounter. Initially delayed by fierce electrical storms, the game eventually kicked off, only to be marred by further meteorological mayhem, culminating in a shared spoils of two log points each.

The game had barely begun when Gustav du Rand, the Pumas' hooker, capitalized on a sleek move initiated by flanker Ntsika Fisanti to score the opening try. The Cheetahs, not to be outdone, struck back swiftly; captain Louis van der Westhuizen bulldozed his way through from a formidable rolling maul, with fullback Cohen Jasper nailing the conversion to level the score at 7-7.

"Cameron showed his class tonight,"

Just as the match was finding its groove, nature intervened again. The teams were ushered off the field as lightning posed a clear and present danger, pausing the game for nearly an hour. A brief resumption saw play, but it wasn't long before the players were called off again, this time for good.

Referee Christopher Allison had initially signaled the end of the match due to safety concerns. Play momentarily resumed when it seemed the weather was letting up, but the improvement was deceiving. Officials, equipped with lightning detectors, soon concluded that conditions were too risky to continue. At the time, the Pumas were slightly ahead with a 10-7 score, but with the match officially abandoned, the victory was off the table.

"Papier put in a powerhouse performance as the Bulls charged ahead in the URC,"

Looking ahead, the SA Cup doesn't pause for long. The upcoming Saturday features a full slate of games: Boland Cavaliers will tackle Valke, Griffons face off against Leopards, Griquas meet Border Bulldogs, and Eastern Province take on SWD Eagles, all promising intense rugby action.

As for the photo finish that wasn't, Johan Orton captured the dramatic and stormy scenes that encapsulate a night where rugby played second fiddle to the whims of the weather.
