Lima Sopoaga, the former All Blacks fly-half, dramatically marked his NPC comeback by nailing a clutch, match-winning try for Waikato against Auckland. Signing on with a symbolic $1 contract, Sopoaga's entry not only resurrected his team from a dire situation but also cemented his status as a game-changer in the season opener.

Waikato's chances looked bleak as they trailed 32-12 midway through the second half. According to Opta’s Predictor, their odds of victory were a mere 0.4%. However, the momentum shifted with Oli Matthis igniting hope by scoring off a rolling maul. Sopoaga, alongside Aaron Cruden, then masterminded a play that saw Matthis again dashing down the line to score, following up with Tepaea Cook-Savage slicing through for another try.

Despite Auckland's Rico Simpson slotting a penalty to widen the gap, Waikato remained undeterred. Sopoaga's no-look pass eventually set up Rui Farrant for a pivotal try, narrowing the scoreline. With the clock ticking down, it was Sopoaga again who delivered the decisive blow. Echoing his days with the Highlanders, he sliced through Auckland's defense and after a swift exchange with Cook-Savage, darted over the line for the winning try. Aaron Cruden sealed the deal with a successful conversion, clinching the game as the final seconds waned.

Auckland had a last-gasp attempt to snatch victory but Simpson’s drop goal was thwarted, ensuring Waikato walked away victorious. Reflecting on his return and his unconventional contract, Sopoaga shared a light-hearted anecdote about how this opportunity came to be.

"I actually just caught Floss (Ross Filipo) in a pub one day after playing a bit of golf with my father-in-law, and he just asked me what I was up to. I said, ‘Ah, I’m not too sure. I’ll just go where the wind blows,’"

he recounted to D’Arcy Waldergrave on Newstalk ZB.

Sopoaga added,

"He said, ‘Well, why don’t you come down to Waikato and give us a hand? We run pretty light, don’t have a deep squad and have got a few injuries.’"

Following this casual pub proposal, he signed the $1 contract, underlining that his return was not motivated by money but by a genuine desire to contribute and enjoy the game.

This remarkable match not only highlighted Sopoaga's undiminished skills and leadership but also underscored the dramatic and unpredictable nature of rugby, where legends can rekindle their magic and defy the odds.
