As the Vodacom URC playoff chase intensifies, the Lions are unleashing their youthful vigor to surge ahead. The Johannesburg squad is steeling themselves for a fierce clash as they welcome the surging Sharks to Ellis Park this Saturday.

Leading the youthful charge is U21 captain Siba Mahashe, who is eyeing a spot in coach Ivan van Rooyen’s matchday squad of 23. Fresh from his senior debut earlier this year—a victory against Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup—Mahashe is ready to step up.

"Obviously there is that jump from junior level to senior level, but at least I’ve had some sessions to train with the guys to get used to the physicality. So in that game [against Lyon] it was something I was prepared for."

The Sharks are heading to Jozi with a full head of steam, aiming for a spot in the top eight. Known for their forward might and strategic kicking, the visitors present a formidable challenge. Mahashe and his pack are not taking them lightly.

"Obviously we know the Sharks are a very physical team, so we know they’re going to come at us. They’ve also got a good kicking game. We’ve obviously tried to come up with plans to try and nullify that."

Mahashe finds himself in a nurturing environment, surrounded by seasoned pros like Ruan Venter, Jarod Cairns, and Renzo du Plessis. This cadre of mentors is crucial as he hones his skills.

While the Lions roster features seasoned leaders, Mahashe emphasizes the inclusive nature of the team’s leadership approach. “We’ve got set leaders here in the team, but the good thing about this group is that everyone is encouraged to be their own leader and to bring up something when we see something, but at least we have a group of leaders we can look up to. Every training is an opportunity to put yourself out there and hopefully the coaches see something in you that can help the team move forward.”

This Saturday's matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter as these two powerhouses collide, with the Lions hoping their blend of experience and emerging talent like Mahashe will carry the day.
