Two titans of Argentine rugby, Santiago Cordero and Francisco Gómez Kodela, have decided to hang up their international boots, marking the end of an era for Los Pumas. After a stellar 29 years combined on the international stage, their careers wrapped up with a resounding 52-17 win over Uruguay, a match that saw Cordero dazzle with a try, encapsulating his career's brilliance.

Cordero, at 31, leaves a legacy punctuated by his electrifying play, which includes a career-highlight try against the British and Irish Lions in Dublin. Off the field, Cordero shared heartfelt sentiments about his departure.

"After many incredible years with Los Pumas, the time has come to close this era. I decided to take a step away from the test team. The distance from my wife and children has become increasingly more difficult, and today they are my priority,"

he stated, emphasizing family as his new focus. Despite retiring from international rugby, Cordero remains open to club opportunities, having left Connacht recently without a new club contract.

On the other hand, the 40-year-old prop Kodela, known for his durability and a historic victory over the All Blacks in 2020, also steps back, leaving a void in the team since joining in 2008. While he reduces his international duties, Kodela has not yet signaled the end of his club career, continuing to contribute his vast experience, primarily in France.

Fans and commentators have not been shy in expressing their admiration and nostalgia. One fan exclaimed on social media,

"How is Cordero only 31?? That’s insane, feels like he’s been around for years and years. Unbelievable player. 55 caps doesn’t seem enough."

Meanwhile, Planet Rugby's Jared Wright called Cordero a "Pumas pocket rocket," a sentiment echoed by many as they reminisce over his thrilling performances, particularly during the 2015 World Cup.

As these two stalwarts leave the international arena, their absence will surely be felt. Yet, the legacy of their contributions will continue to inspire future generations of Pumas. Their departure turns a page in Argentine rugby, but also signals the dawn of a new era as younger players rise to fill the boots left by these formidable legends.
