Louis Rees-Zammit's return to rugby union was anything but subtle. The Welsh speedster, now with Bristol Bears, marked his comeback with a try and a yellow card in an intense clash at his former stomping ground, Kingsholm, against Gloucester.
Rees-Zammit, who had a brief stint in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, showed no signs of rustiness as he darted through for a try in the 20th minute of the match. However, his performance wasn't flawless; he botched another scoring opportunity by failing to secure a bouncing ball, leading to a knock-on near the try line.
The drama escalated when Rees-Zammit, sitting on the ground after the missed chance, had his hair ruffled by Gloucester’s Caio James. The seemingly playful gesture quickly turned into a full-blown scuffle, drawing the ire of referee Adam Leal.
"As you two started it and it was a seriously horrible picture, you are both going to the bin for 10 minutes,"
Leal announced, sending both players off the field.The tension didn't subside as the players made their way to the sideline, bumping into each other and exchanging heated words, much to the displeasure of the Kingsholm faithful who jeered at their once-celebrated winger.
Despite the setback, Rees-Zammit returned from the sin-bin and continued to play until he was substituted with 25 minutes left on the clock. Bristol sealed the game with a convincing 40-24 victory, setting a positive tone for their upcoming Premiership campaign, which kicks off with a home game against Leicester Tigers.
