Louis Rees-Zammit stormed back onto the rugby union scene with a dynamic, albeit wet, debut for Bristol Bears against Sale Sharks despite the team's 24-15 loss in the Premiership Rugby Cup opener at Salford Community Stadium. This marked his first rugby appearance since his intriguing stint in the NFL, making it not just a game day but a noteworthy comeback.
Transitioning back from American football, where he didn't see regular-season action but trained with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, Rees-Zammit has been back in rugby boots for the last four weeks. His return to the sport was solidified with a one-year deal with the Bears after a six-year tenure and a European Challenge Cup game with Gloucester, his last rugby match before crossing the pond.
The Welsh winger entered the fray in the second half, replacing Josh Carrington at full-back 50 minutes into the game. Despite the deteriorating weather, Rees-Zammit showed promising signs of his inherent rugby prowess. His attempts to launch counterattacks and his adept handling signaled a player shaking off the rust and rekindling his rugby instincts.
"It was a positive that Louis got out there and got some game-time. He’s a threat, and that’s the first of some big steps he’s going to make going forward,"
praised Pat Lam, Director of Rugby at Bristol Bears.Although Bristol conceded three tries following his introduction, none were directly attributed to Rees-Zammit. His performance was an encouraging sign of what’s to come, with Lam confirming his involvement in the upcoming matches, including a significant one against his former club, Gloucester.
Rees-Zammit’s integration into the squad has been seamless, aided by preseason trips and already existing relationships within the team. Lam noted his rapid acclimation and the warm welcome he received from teammates, highlighting the communal spirit of the squad.
"Straight away, the boys took him in and he knows a few of them already. With our pre-season trips to Guernsey and then Portugal on camps, that always helps,"
Lam added. With another Premiership Rugby Cup game on the horizon and the Premiership season kickoff against Leicester looming, Rees-Zammit’s return to rugby union is poised to add an exciting chapter to Bristol Bears' campaign, marking a pivotal return from his brief American football sojourn.
