As the rugby universe gears up for an electrifying season, Bristol Bears are making headlines with their latest recruit, Louis Rees-Zammit. The Welsh winger, a blur on the field, is staging a major comeback to rugby after shedding some serious weight. Pat Lam, the director of rugby for Bristol Bears, unpacked expectations and team strategies at the Prem launch in Twickenham, hinting at a season that could rewrite the club's fortunes.

Tom Jordan, another significant addition to the team from Glasgow Warriors, has shown promising adaptability in his new home. Lam praised Jordan's versatility, saying, "Tom Jordan started a couple of weeks ago, and you can already see his class. He’s been running at 10 to get a good handle on the game plan." The integration of AJ MacGinty has allowed Jordan to flex his skills across multiple positions, enhancing the team's dynamic.

However, it’s Rees-Zammit who’s stealing the spotlight with his return. Known for his lightning pace, there's a palpable buzz around his physical condition and readiness. "Louis Rees-Zammit, man, he is quick," Lam remarked.

"Some of the things he’s done in training are just impressive."

Despite the 18-month hiatus from rugby, Rees-Zammit has reportedly hit the ground running, literally, clocking impressive speeds that affirm he's the fastest in the squad.

Rees-Zammit’s transition back to rugby hasn't been without its challenges. "He’s already said publicly that he needs to chop some weight, which he’s already done and has a bit more to do," explained Lam. The initial training sessions were tough, but visible improvements have been noted, raising expectations for his performance in the upcoming Prem Cup opener against Sale Sharks.

The Bears are not just banking on their offensive prowess this season. Lam emphasized a strategic overhaul of their defensive tactics. "Our strength is not actually running everything; it’s about what’s on, it’s being fearless," he stated. The focus has been on returning to defensive basics and mastering high balls, a move Lam believes is crucial for turning their fortunes around.

With aspirations of finally breaking past the semifinals, Lam is optimistic about the new blend of talent and strategy propelling Bristol into the finals. The addition of a player like Rees-Zammit could very well be the catalyst Bristol needs to clinch that elusive title, marking a new chapter in the club’s history.
