Louw Nel, the dynamo loose forward, is itching to ditch his part-time label and snag a starting slot with the Stormers as they gear up for their Vodacom United Rugby Championship kick-off next month. Despite Western Province's recent setbacks in the Currie Cup—highlighted by a 40-19 thumping at the hands of the Lions at Ellis Park—Nel has shone brightly, bagging a couple of tries that screamed 'pick me' for the bigger league games.
At just 22, and already a seasoned campaigner from his days at Paarl Gim, Nel is set to bring his A-game against the Griquas in a Friday face-off. "For me it’s the opportunity to get minutes under the belt. That’s how you improve, develop and build confidence," Nel remarked, clearly focused on turning every game into a showcase of his burgeoning talent.
"We’re a nice group. Zain (Davids) brings lots of energy and guys like Scarra (Ntubeni) and Gary (Porter) bring high standards. The Currie Cup is a great opportunity to show what we’re made of, looking at the URC."
As the Stormers prepare to take on the tough-as-nails Griquas, Nel is wary of the challenge ahead. "They’re a good team, very well coached. They’re physical and it’ll be very difficult playing them on their home ground," he added, setting the stage for what promises to be a gritty showdown in Kimberley.
The Stormers' bench looks set to be bolstered by fresh talent with Brok Harris, the assistant coach, hinting at unleashing more Junior Springboks in the fray. Last week, centre Gino Cupido made heads turn with his stellar debut, and now other young guns like Riley Norton, Xola Nyali, and Wandile Mlaba are lined up to add their zest to the mix.
With the Currie Cup heating up and the URC on the horizon, Nel’s ambitions reflect a young man ready to step up and be counted. As rugby fans, we’re strapped in, ready to watch these young talents strut their stuff on the grand stage. Friday’s clash is not just a game; it’s a stepping stone for Nel and his comrades, eyeing glory in the storm that is the URC.
