Nick Mallett has weighed in on the budding career of Springbok flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, declaring the young star a 'work in progress' under the guidance of attack coach Tony Brown. In a recent bout against Georgia in Nelspruit, where the Boks triumphed with a 55-10 scoreline, 23-year-old Feinberg-Mngomezulu donned the No 10 jersey but had mixed fortunes on the field.

Despite showcasing his trademark attacking flair, Sacha’s kicking game left much to be desired as he missed his first three conversion attempts before being swapped out for Handre Pollard in the latter half. Post-match, coach Rassie Erasmus shared that Feinberg-Mngomezulu had sustained a hip injury during warm-ups yet bravely decided to play. Mallett, speaking on the Talking Boks podcast, pointed out both the highs and the lows of Sacha's performance. "He played a typically Sacha game – elusive, great pace, weaving in and out of traffic," Mallett described.

"But his goal-kicking wasn’t where it should be. That’s usually an area where he has the edge over someone like Manie Libbok. And his distribution wasn’t as sharp either."

Mallett continued to emphasize that while Feinberg-Mngomezulu is not yet the complete package, Tony Brown’s mentorship will be pivotal in honing his talents. "He’s not the finished product at 10. He’s a work in progress, and he’ll get better – if he listens and embraces the role," Mallett noted.

He further elaborated on the crucial role of a flyhalf, which Brown is likely impressing upon Sacha. "Tony’s presence is massive. He’ll help Sacha understand that a flyhalf’s job is to make others look good – to cut down on errors and bring the best out of the players around him. It’s about learning when to shine, and when to steer the ship," Mallett explained.

With the spotlight firmly on him as South Africa’s new sound at 10, Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s journey is one to watch, shaped by the insights and guidance of seasoned pros like Brown and the critical, yet supportive eye of pundits like Mallett.
