Matfield Endorses Libbok as Top Flyhalf Choice
Victor Matfield has declared Manie Libbok as potentially the best choice for the Springboks when they aim to amplify their attack against the All Blacks this Saturday in Baltimore. The flyhalf spot became Libbok's stage during a critical moment in the third Test at FNB Stadium after Cheslin Kolbe exited early due to a severe injury.

Libbok entered the fray in just the ninth minute after fullback Kolbe was sidelined with a broken jaw. This reshuffle saw Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, initially the starting flyhalf, move to the fullback position following a sin-bin penalty. Libbok's performance at flyhalf was pivotal, helping the team clinch a 29-24 win, thus securing a lead in the series with a 2-1 score before heading to the U.S. finale.

"In Manie we've got a 10 that if you want to open it up, I think he's probably the best,"

While Libbok shone on the field, Feinberg-Mngomezulu has faced some hurdles this season, contrasting his stellar performances in 2025. Matfield noted on the Rugby Rivals podcast that Feinberg-Mngomezulu is enduring a challenging "second-year syndrome" but still acknowledged his important contributions.

"Sacha has the X factor, he’s going through that second-year syndrome when the first year everything just worked, whereas now he has to work for it."

Despite being positioned at fullback during the second half of the match, Feinberg-Mngomezulu impressed Matfield with his resilience and versatility, particularly in defense and kicking:

"He really stepped up, even though he was at 15. Those kicks he had to make and his physicality on defense is unbelievable."

Matfield still sees a bright future for Feinberg-Mngomezulu in the flyhalf position, emphasizing the need for him to adjust and learn under pressure. The expectation remains high, but the potential for magic on the field persists as he gains more experience in building game pressure and seizing opportunities.

The team selection for the upcoming fourth Test will be announced, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to this intense rugby rivalry on international soil.

This series not only spotlights individual players like Libbok and Feinberg-Mngomezulu but also cements the ongoing narrative of one of rugby's greatest rivalries, promising fans around the world a spectacular display of talent and strategy.
