In a recent episode of "The Good, The Bad, & The Rugby" podcast, former England scrum-half Matt Dawson shared his insights on Ben Spencer’s performance with the national team. Dawson, alongside rugby legend Paul Grayson, dissected the challenges and expectations facing Spencer in the upcoming Nations Championship campaign.

Dawson expressed a particular concern about Spencer's ability to translate his commanding performances at Bath into the international arena. “There is something holding him back when he’s in that England jersey, and whether it’s historical, whether his relationship with somebody,” Dawson remarked. He added, “I’ve got no idea, but he is not the same player as I see in a Bath jersey. I would love him to be, because I think he’s very different to those two Northampton scrum-halves.”

"Just be Ben Spencer"

Despite his prowess at Bath, where he has been a linchpin, Spencer has found it challenging to replicate this form on the international stage. His journey with England has been a slow burn, initially overshadowed by players like Ben Youngs and Danny Care. It was not until the 2024 Autumn Nations Series that Spencer started a game for England, a significant delay after his debut in 2018.

Dawson further highlighted the mental shift required at the international level, suggesting, “It was a big step up into the international game, and it’s not all about hitting cheat lines and scoring great tries, and hopefully there will be lots of that, but there’s a vast majority of the game where you’ve got to be really pragmatic, and it’s fast and furious in the mind, and the decisions have to be absolutely spot on.”

With the rise of new talents like Alex Mitchell, and the pressure from upcoming youngsters Archie McParland and Charlie Bracken, the competition remains fierce. Spencer, known for his quieter demeanor, might find the high-octane international environment a tough nut to crack compared to the familiar confines of Bath.

As the summer progresses, the rugby community will be keen to see if Ben Spencer can indeed heed Dawson’s advice to harness his intrinsic strengths and "just be Ben Spencer" on the field for England. This might just be the key to unlocking his potential and asserting his place as a formidable force in international rugby.
