Former Scotland coach Matt Williams has turned heads with his unexpected commendation of the Springboks' coaching squad, signaling a significant shift from his usual critical stance. Known for his candid critiques, particularly aimed at Rassie Erasmus's tactical approaches, Williams has been vocal about his concerns over South Africa's game strategy, notably their reliance on what he considers an overemphasis on the Bomb Squad and a kick-centric, set-piece-heavy play style. Yet, in a twist, Williams now applauds these coaches for their progressive tactics in transforming the team’s gameplay.

Writing in the Irish Times, Williams expressed his newfound respect for the Springboks' evolving strategy, which now includes a more dynamic running attack, "With smaller, more agile and lightning-fast backs being selected, the coaches deserve great credit in how they are moving the game forward." This praise extends beyond just the South African team as he highlighted the overall enhancement in attacking play seen across the Rugby Championship teams.

Williams underscored the urgency for Ireland to adapt quickly to these advancements. "In six weeks Ireland will face New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia in the Autumn Internationals. Ireland must be prepared to adapt to the rapid changes in attacking tactics we are witnessing in the Rugby Championship or risk being left behind," he warned.

"Even the Springboks, the greatest scrum, maul, and kick team in the world, have developed a spectacular running attack."

The potency of the Springboks' new approach was starkly evident as they trounced the All Blacks with a decisive 43-10 victory, marking a significant turning point in their tactical evolution. However, Williams didn’t shy away from criticizing the officiating in the Championship, which he found to be marred by "highly technical and very questionable decisions."

Meanwhile, the audacity of Wallabies captain Harry Wilson caught Williams' eye during a nail-biting face-off with Argentina. Williams vividly recounted the match’s climax, "Two weeks ago at half time in Townsville Argentina led 25-7. As full time approached, the Wallabies had attacked with such persistent flair that the gap was down to just three points, 25-28." In a bold move, Wilson opted against a secure penalty shot, instead pushing his team to seize a last-minute victory, which they did when Angus Bell scored, clinching the game. Williams reflected on Wilson’s decision with a mix of admiration and tension, "‘Come on Harry,’ I pleaded to an empty room. ‘Take the points.’"

This blend of strategic evolution and on-field bravery encapsulates the current thrilling state of international rugby, setting a high bar for Ireland's upcoming challenges in the Autumn Internationals.
