Munster Rugby Appoints Avan Lee as Interim CEO

Munster Rugby, in collaboration with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), has named Avan Lee as the United Rugby Championship team's interim chief executive. With a rich background in rugby management, Lee has held significant positions such as the chief executive of the Hurricanes, one of New Zealand's premier Super Rugby teams, from 2015 to 2025. This experience brings a seasoned strategic leader to the helm of Munster.

Avan Lee steps into the role following the departure of Ian Flanagan, who held the position since 2019. Flanagan's exit comes on the heels of some discontent expressed by Munster's fans and former players over governance under his leadership. Ger Malone, Munster Rugby's chairperson, expressed delight at securing Lee, praising his extensive rugby knowledge and promising a collaborative leadership approach.

"We are delighted to appoint Avan as interim CEO of Munster Rugby," Malone stated. "He brings strong leadership credentials, significant rugby expertise and a collaborative approach that we believe will be hugely valuable to Munster Rugby."

Lee's appointment is seen as a critical move in a crucial period for Munster Rugby. The IRFU's chief executive, Kevin Potts, reinforced this sentiment, highlighting Lee's deep understanding of both professional rugby and the broader sports landscape.

"Avan is a highly experienced sports executive with a deep understanding of professional rugby and the wider sporting landscape," Potts commented. "We are confident that his leadership, experience and strategic insight will positively impact during this crucial period for the province."

Upon accepting the role, Lee acknowledged the challenges ahead but also emphasized the opportunities that lay in strengthening the ties within the rugby community. Lee, no stranger to Irish rugby, having spent nearly a decade living and playing club rugby in Ireland, expressed his commitment to uniting the community under a shared vision of excellence.

"I am honored to be appointed interim CEO of Munster Rugby," Lee said. "This is a province with a proud history, passionate supporters and a strong reputation within the game. There are important challenges ahead but I firmly believe there is also tremendous opportunity. I am excited to work alongside our players, coaches, staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters as we build on Munster Rugby’s strengths and shape a successful future."

Avan Lee is set to formally begin his role at the end of October. During his tenure, he will work closely with the Munster Rugby board, the IRFU, and various stakeholders across the province to foster the continued development and success of Munster Rugby.
