In a gritty showdown at Thomond Park, Munster muscled their way past the Lions to claim a thrilling 24-17 victory, securing their spot in the Vodacom URC quarter-finals and edging out Ulster in the process. Munster, who only needed a single point to make the top eight, instead grabbed a full four-point haul, vaulting from ninth to fifth in the standings. They are now set to clash with the Bulls in Pretoria in a fortnight. Meanwhile, the Lions, despite the loss, had their quarter-final berth already booked following Ulster's defeat the previous night, and will face Leinster in Dublin.

The match was not without its dramas, starting with Munster having to rejig their lineup last minute due to the loss of Ireland flyhalf Jack Crowley during the warm-up, thrusting JJ Hanrahan into the spotlight at number 10. Despite the disruption, Munster struck first blood. After surviving an early Lions barrage, a tactical 50/22 kick set up Evan O’Connell to touch down for the opening score. The Lions responded when Quan Horn capitalized on a Munster error, sprinting clear to score an interception try.

"Quan Horn makes the read and the Lions are in for their first."

Munster briefly regained the lead with a Hanrahan penalty, but their momentum was checked as Andrew Smith and Seán O’Brien were sin-binned back-to-back for deliberate knock-ons, reducing Munster to 13 men. The Lions looked to exploit their numerical advantage, yet fluffed a key lineout. Munster's defense held firm until Kelly Mpeku found space on the wing to score, giving the Lions a temporary edge. However, just before the break, Munster scrumhalf Craig Casey sniped through to restore Munster’s lead, making it 17-14 at halftime.

The second half saw both teams spurn chances until Munster lock Tom Ahern bulldozed over to extend their lead. The Lions weren't done, though. Flyhalf Chris Smith slotted a penalty to bring the Lions within a converted try. In the closing stages, with the rain intensifying, the Lions pressed but were repeatedly denied, including a crucial moment when Angelo Davids was thwarted by an unkind bounce, allowing Munster to close out a nail-biting win.

"13-man Munster can’t keep up with the Lions. Kelly Mpeku gets his first of the match."

Munster’s tries came from Evan O’Connell, Craig Casey, and Tom Ahern, with JJ Hanrahan converting all three and adding a penalty. The Lions' tries were scored by Quan Horn and Kelly Mpeku, with Chris Smith adding the conversions.

This victory not only pushes Munster into a promising playoff position but also injects a surge of confidence ahead of their daunting trip to Pretoria. For the Lions, it's back to the drawing board as they prepare to take on a formidable Leinster side in Dublin, with both teams eyeing a deeper run in the Champions Cup next season.
