Continuing their aggressive push in the transfer market, Newcastle Falcons have clinched a deal with seasoned powerhouse Amanaki Mafi. The Japan number eight, who has a rich resume including stints with Melbourne Rebels, Sunwolves, and Bath, has committed to a one-year contract with the club.

Mafi, a dynamic 35-year-old from Tonga, first showcased his rugby prowess at U20 level for his native country before relocating to Japan for higher education. It was during his five-year tenure at NTT Shining Arcs that Mafi exploded onto the international stage, eventually making a notable impact at the 2015 Rugby World Cup under the guidance of Eddie Jones. Despite Japan's heartbreak of not advancing past the pool stages, Mafi's performance, particularly in the stunning upset against South Africa, remains a high point.

The hard-hitting number eight continued to represent Japan in international rugby, playing a pivotal role in their 2019 World Cup campaign on home turf, where they reached the quarterfinals. Now, several years later, Mafi is set to bring his formidable skills to the Premiership as Newcastle Falcons' latest acquisition.

"Amanaki is a big ball carrier with great footwork and an offloading game, and someone who will get our fans off their seats,"

enthused Steve Diamond, the club’s director of rugby. Diamond is optimistic about the impact Mafi will have, noting, "He makes impacts in both attack and defence, he will bring others into the game and I see this as a really significant signing for us."

Mafi himself is equally thrilled about his new journey. "It’s a real honour to join a club like Newcastle Falcons," he stated. "I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited for what lies ahead. I’m ready to work hard, learn, and do whatever I can to help the team." His addition follows closely on the heels of other key signings, further bolstering the squad amidst rumors of a potential club takeover.

With Mafi on board, Newcastle Falcons are signaling their intentions loud and clear—they are not just participating in the Premiership, they are playing to win.
