The Newcastle Red Bulls have officially announced a pivotal shift in their coaching lineup, heralding a new era under the guidance of Dan McFarland, who will assume the role of head coach this summer. Joining him will be Calum MacRae, returning as defence coach, alongside a cadre of seasoned coaches, all aimed at steering the club back to prominence.

McFarland, with a rich coaching tapestry woven through his tenures in Japan with Kobelco Steelers and in Europe, is poised to inject his extensive experience into the Red Bulls. "I'm very honoured to be joining Newcastle Red Bulls. The club and wider region has a fantastic rugby tradition which I am very respectful of, and keen to learn more about," McFarland expressed. He added,

"I'm looking forward to working with all the players and support staff, and being heavily involved in one of the most exciting projects in world rugby at the moment."

The return of MacRae marks a significant reconnection with the club’s past to bolster its future. Having developed his coaching prowess with Edinburgh and Benetton, MacRae brings a strategic depth to the defence. Reflecting on his return, MacRae shared,

"I’m delighted to be coming back to the club where it all started for me as a coach, and at the start of an exciting new chapter with Red Bull."

He also noted his personal ties to the area, adding a layer of community significance to his professional commitment.

The coaching team remains robust with Stephen Jones continuing as attack coach, Micky Ward as scrum coach, and Lee Dickson enhancing the skills and transitions of the players. Mark Laycock’s dual role as coaching coordinator and transition coach underscores the club's focus on nurturing homegrown talent.

This reinforced coaching structure is set to shepherd an array of new talent, including notable players like All Black No.8 Hoskins Sotutu, England scrum-half Raffi Quirke, and Maori All Blacks prop Pouri Rakete-Stones. The influx of these players promises to elevate the team's dynamics and competitive edge in the upcoming seasons.

With a blend of international experience and a deep connection to local roots, the Newcastle Red Bulls are poised not just to compete, but to redefine their standing in both domestic and European rugby landscapes. As the new coaching staff takes the helm, the anticipation for what lies ahead is palpable, setting the stage for a transformative journey in the annals of the club.
