Vodacom Bulls XV coach Phiwe Nomlomo voiced his frustrations regarding his team's lack of discipline following their narrow 33-31 defeat to the Pumas at Loftus Versfeld. The match saw the Bulls handicapped significantly with three yellow cards and one red card issued against them.
The match tipped into chaos when flank Abongile Nonkontwana was escalated from a yellow to a red card for a high-impact shoulder tackle. Additionally, hooker Siphosethu Mnebelele and replacement loose forward Cephas van Biljon were penalized, leaving the Bulls depleted with only 12 players at one point.
"Discipline is a massive issue and we must deal with it. Personally, I must deal with it."
Despite being at a numerical disadvantage, the Bulls staged a commendable comeback from a 19-0 deficit in the first 21 minutes. Coach Nomlomo drew positives from the resilience displayed by his youthful squad.
"Big time, big time. That’s one thing we said all week. We just wanted to take a massive step. We’ve taken that step and we’re just going to keep building."
While the Bulls seemed to struggle in the scrums, rucks, and mauls, Nomlomo did not express concern over his team's physicality. He compared the situation with other teams like the Cheetahs, noting the advantages of cohesive and long-term teamwork.
"It’s a lot easier for them to play the way they play because they’ve been going at it for a bit longer, they’re a lot more connected and have more cohesion," he explained.
As the Bulls prepare to face the Cheetahs at home next Sunday, they remain at the bottom of the Currie Cup standings after four consecutive losses. Despite the setbacks, the fight shown by the Bulls suggests a potential for improvement as the season progresses.
