In the eye of a storm not just made of clouds but controversy, Brian O’Driscoll has thrown his support behind Finn Russell amidst a furore involving the British and Irish Lions' tactics off the field. After a lightning delay halted the third Test in Sydney, cameras captured a calm Russell on his phone, a scene soon obscured by Lions general manager David Nucifora with a towel, sparking a flurry of debate.

The incident raised eyebrows not only about the privacy in dressing rooms but also concerning player behavior during game interruptions. Russell, seen smiling at the camera after realizing he was being filmed, received backing from O’Driscoll, who questioned the necessity of Nucifora's cover-up. "I’ve seen different people talking about it. It’s in the contract that those cameras are allowed in the dressing room, so what’s the point in covering up?" O’Driscoll critiqued during his chat on Off The Ball.

"He has license to do whatever he wants, Finn just does things his own way and that’s grand."

O’Driscoll elaborated on the varied ways players might spend such unexpected downtime. "The last thing you want to do is burn nervous energy for half an hour. It’s about reducing your heart rate and then having the capacity to go again," he explained, emphasizing the personal nature of handling such interruptions.

While the camera fiasco unfolded, another lens in a different room showed other Lions players lounging on beanbags, an image O’Driscoll used to highlight the autonomy players have during breaks. "Seeing the lads down in beanbags and doing their own thing, that’s completely their prerogative," he said, dismissing the idea that there was a right or wrong way to handle the pause. Despite Australia's dominance before and after the break, O’Driscoll praised the individual strategies of the players.

The legendary player also reflected on the rarity and absurdity of the situation. "How nuts is it that this happened? No one’s ever encountered this before," he mused, recalling a similar but less dramatic delay earlier in his career due to a power outage. The uniqueness of the scenario was, in his view, not sufficiently acknowledged, overshadowed perhaps by the drama it sparked off the field.
