Embrose Papier is eagerly anticipating playing alongside Handré Pollard in an upcoming Test match, a reunion of the Vodacom Bulls teammates as they gear up to lead the Springboks against Scotland. After a long hiatus since his last start in November 2018 against Wales in Cardiff, Papier has been selected by Bok coach Rassie Erasmus to start in the second round of the Nations Championship following a major team reshuffle.
The SA URC Player of the Year, Papier, expressed his enthusiasm about reuniting with Pollard on the field, recognizing the unique challenges of representing their country. "We all know Handré has a lot of experience. We’ve spent a lot of time together on the pitch and I’m just really excited to go into this game with him,” Papier shared. He added,
"But we know it’s going to be a challenge for us. It’s a different calling in the Springbok environment, and we’ve just got to pitch up and just give our all on the day."
Papier views his return to the starting lineup as a testament to his dedication and hard work, yet he acknowledges that this is merely the beginning of more to strive for. "It’s exciting to be back, but I still need to grow and work hard to earn my place here,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of team dynamics.
"But it’s all about putting the team first. It’s about helping to prep the guys and if you get to play, just to give your all."
Rassie Erasmus also commented on Papier’s role, showing confidence in his abilities to perform under pressure. Meanwhile, Eben Etzebeth is in a race against time to be fit for the upcoming match against the All Blacks, adding another layer of tension and excitement to the Springboks' campaign.
