Paul Willemse, once the stalwart of French rugby and a South African native, has decided to hang up his boots, citing a series of head injuries as the primary reason for his retirement. Born and bred in Pretoria, Willemse climbed the rugby ranks at the Lions and the Bulls before setting sail for France in 2014. Just a year into his French adventure, he signed with Montpellier and quickly became the darling of the local fans.

Willemse, who swapped his Springbok dreams for a French jersey in 2018, accumulated 32 Test caps over his career. His last appearance on the pitch was a fleeting five minutes during a Top 14 game against Stade Français on October 5, 2024. His international swansong was less than ideal, featuring both a yellow and a red card during the first half of France's Six Nations match against Ireland earlier that year—a sour note, particularly following his absence from the 2023 World Cup due to injury.

"After many years on the field, it is time to close this chapter,"

In a poignant social media post, Willemse opened up about his difficult decision. "Rugby was not just my career, it was my only dream, my whole life. Choosing to stop after multiple concussions has been the hardest decision I’ve ever made. For a long time, I tried to hold on, because when you’ve lived one dream, it’s frightening to imagine life beyond it. But I’ve come to accept it, and even find comfort," he shared.

He continued, "I thank the coaches who believed in me, especially those who shaped me as a young man. I thank my family, above all my wife, for walking every step of this road with me. And to the supporters who have followed me from South Africa to France. I carry your voices with me."

Through victories and challenges, Willemse remains grateful for the journey. "The victories, the struggles, the lessons, I wouldn’t change any of it. It made me the man I am today. One dream ends, but the man it shaped remains."

As Willemse steps away from the field, his legacy includes a Top 14 title and a series of memorable performances for Montpellier and France. His departure marks the end of an era for both Montpellier and fans worldwide, leaving behind a legacy of determination and resilience.
