At the iconic Loftus Versfeld this past Saturday, the Pumas unleashed a rugby masterclass, dismantling the Vodacom Bulls' previously unblemished Currie Cup streak with a scintillating 41-7 victory. Despite coming off a loss to the Cheetahs and facing a Bulls squad riding high on consecutive triumphs over Western Province and the Sharks, the Pumas, led by coach Jimmy Stonehouse, flipped the script with a display of gutsy, inspired rugby.

The game kicked off with both teams locked in a tactical standoff, but Pumas flyhalf Danrich Visagie finally broke the ice with a penalty. The Bulls responded when debutant wing Riyaad Bam, stepping in for Aphiwe Dyantyi, touched down following a slick setup by Katlego Letebele. However, just before the break, Pumas hooker Eduan Swart found a gap and charged to the try-line, swinging momentum back in favor of the visitors.

The second half saw the Pumas escalate their assault. Captain Willie Engelbrecht bulldozed his way over the line early on, and a brilliant play by scrumhalf Ross Braude, who regathered his own chip kick, set up lock Tiaan de Klerk for another try. "When Ross scooped up that ball and passed it to Tiaan, I knew we had them," recounted Engelbrecht post-game.

The game was slipping away from the Bulls, now trailing 22-7.

Braude wasn’t finished yet. He darted from a quick tap to notch a bonus-point securing try. Late in the game, replacements Hanno Theunissen and Andre Fouche sealed the deal with tries, underlining a dominant Pumas performance. The Pumas are now poised at the top of the log, looking ahead to a clash with the Lions, while the Bulls hope to regroup against Boland.

Despite the loss, Bulls’ coach remained philosophical in defeat. "Rugby's a tough teacher; we lick our wounds today but learn for tomorrow," he reflected.

With their eyes now set on recovery, the Bulls aim to bounce back stronger.

On a bittersweet note for the Bulls, Riyaad Bam’s debut try was a highlight in an otherwise grim outing. For the Pumas, contributions across the board, with Visagie adding the extras on four of the six tries, showed a team hitting its stride at the right moment.

This stunning upset not only bursts the Bulls’ bubble but also sends a resounding message across the Currie Cup: underestimate the Pumas at your peril.
