In an unexpected tactical move, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has thrown Quan Horn into the flyhalf position for the upcoming clash against the Barbarians, signaling a strategic experiment amid broader squad management considerations. Erasmus is leveraging Saturday's game to test new waters, revealing a glimpse into the Boks' future game plans.
Erasmus pointed out that the decision was influenced by the need to manage player workload and injuries effectively. "Manie [Libbok] has played a lot of rugby in Japan recently and we want to manage him properly. We must also see Handré [Pollard] get through the URC final [on Friday night] without injury, while Sacha [Feinberg-Mngomezulu] is currently injured,” he explained. This mix of circumstances paved the way for Horn, traditionally a fullback, to showcase his skills at flyhalf.
"The other assistant coaches, all of us, really see something in him when it comes to 10."
Horn's adaptability was a key factor in this decision, with Erasmus noting his potential dual role utility: "We know he can play 15, but if he can play 10 and 15, hopefully in future that will help with a 6-2 bench split." Assistant coaches Mzwandile Stick and Tony Brown have also been impressed by Horn's performances in training and games, highlighting his involvement as a first receiver for the Lions, robust defense, and reliable passing.
Erasmus also took a moment to commend Junior Boks flyhalf Vusi Moyo, who has been turning heads within the camp. "Vusi, who is on the bench, is one of the guys who really caught the eye in these two weeks. He’s a very calm guy, physical, and kicks without effort," Erasmus remarked, hinting at the depth being developed in the squad.
On the wings, Cheslin Kolbe is slated to handle the primary goal-kicking duties at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, with Horn lined up as the secondary option. Stick confirmed, "Cheslin has always been a back-up [kicker] for us, so I think we are safe there."
The Springboks' lineup for the match against the Barbarians thus features a strategic mix of experience and fresh talent, with the SA U20 captain leading the charge, backed by the Junior Boks spearheading the SA A attack. This match not only tests new player combinations but also underscores the Boks' commitment to nurturing and testing young talent under high-stakes conditions.
