Former Irish international Alan Quinlan has cast doubt over Australia's match readiness after their disappointing performances against the British & Irish Lions. The Wallabies suffered heavy defeats in the series' opening games, leaving the Lions to chase a clean sweep in Sydney, turning the final showdown into a mere formality.

Quinlan highlighted the Wallabies' sparse schedule leading into the series as a critical error. "If Australia had the same number of games or even three or four games before the series they are much better prepared," he remarked on Off The Ball. The lack of match play saw the team struggle to find their rhythm early on, a misstep Quinlan describes as 'undercooked' and costly.

"It’s a pity that happened because they were undercooked. That’s not necessarily saying they would have won either of the Tests but that first Test they were very slow out of the blocks and it was costly for them."

Despite improvements in the second Test, with Rob Valetini and Will Skelton bolstering the squad, their impact wasn't enough to turn the tide. Quinlan noted, "Valetini and Skelton possibly could have made the first two Tests but their match fitness was probably down a little bit and that was an issue for them the other night." Their presence in the later stages underscored Australia's initial blunder of not granting them earlier game time.

The series, however, hasn’t been without its dramatic moments. Quinlan pointed out the narrow margins that defined the second Test, with the Lions' persistence paying off in critical moments. "All the stats would suggest that Australia should have won this game. Very small margins but that little bit of power and probably territorial control in the second half was on the Lions’ side," he observed.

With the series outcome already decided, the focus now shifts to the third Test's team selections. Quinlan is keen to see how Lions coach Andy Farrell will adjust his lineup, hinting at the potential for some players to get their chance to shine. "People have been asking a lot, will there be changes? Will people be getting kind of a run? Obviously everyone wants to play," he said, emphasizing the tight competition for spots.

As the Wallabies regroup for their final test, the lessons from their preparation blunders remain stark, underscoring the fine line between victory and defeat on the international stage.
