Rassie: Boks Rise Above Referee Decisions

When Lood de Jager was sent off with a red card in the clash against France, Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks' coach, hinted that maybe a 20-minute penalty would have sufficed instead of a full match ejection. Despite disagreeing with the referee's call, Erasmus emphasizes that the Boks have mastered the art of moving on without letting referee decisions trip them up. De Jager's dismissal came just before halftime for a shoulder-to-head hit on French fullback Thomas Ramos, during the Boks' 32-17 triumph in Paris.

The incident unfolded as Ramos dipped following a tackle by Cobus Reinach, leading to the contentious contact from De Jager. Referee Angus Gardner deemed the move a clear "permanent red" situation. "The action is always illegal – it’s shoulder to head, a permanent red card," Gardner was heard stating during the in-game review.

Despite being down a player, South Africa rallied magnificently in the second half, notching three unanswered tries to secure a decisive victory. This resilience is something Erasmus credits to the team's growth and maturity. "We’ve learned to accept decisions," he explained. "There were times when we would really think about them, and it would bother us for the next 10 or 15 minutes. But we’ve now been together since 2018, and we’ve learned that dwelling on something like that just gets you nowhere."

"Whether it was the right or wrong call, we got a red card. I think it was a red card, but I don’t know if it was a permanent red or a 20-minute red. That’s probably debatable."

Erasmus also reflected on past incidents, like Pieter-Steph du Toit’s red card in 2022 and Deon Fourie’s yellow in another tight Test, suggesting these experiences have fortified the team's ability to handle adversity. This was further demonstrated by strategic second-half adjustments, most notably the substitution of Siya Kolisi in his 100th Test for lineout ace Ruan Nortje—a tactical switch that significantly tipped the scales in the Boks' favor as they dominated the latter stages of the game.

The debate continues on whether De Jager's action warranted a straight red or a more lenient sanction, but what's clear is the Springboks' ability to adapt and overcome, regardless of the challenges thrown their way.
