In the fast-paced world of international rugby, Rassie Erasmus isn't shy about throwing fresh talent into the deep end. Enter Zachary Porthen, the uncapped Stormers' tighthead prop who's caught the eye of South Africa's discerning head coach. Set to become the youngest prop to strut his stuff for the Springboks in the professional era, the 21-year-old ex-Junior Springbok captain has Erasmus betting big on his cool under pressure.
Erasmus, who's had minimal personal interaction with Porthen, relies heavily on the insights of scrum coach Daan Human and the elite player development system. "I don’t know him that well personally but [scrum coach] Daan [Human] has worked with him a lot and he comes through our EPD structures," Erasmus said. Despite the limited one-on-one, Erasmus is convinced of Porthen's readiness, "What I’ve seen of him when he’s playing for the Stormers is that he’s a nice, natural athlete."
"I haven’t coached him or worked with him a lot – I’ve maybe said a hundred words to him – but he understands why we’re starting him, and who he’s starting with. He seems to be quite level-headed, obviously excited, but he will be nervous. That’s why there’s a team around him for him to have the best chance of performing."
History shows Erasmus has a knack for spotting and nurturing young talent, with Canan Moodie's stellar debut at just 18 being a prime example. "We played Canan Moodie when he was 18 against Australia away from home, and he scored the match-winning try against Marika Koroibete after we’d lost the first Test," recalled Erasmus, highlighting the potential for young players to make an immediate impact.
The Boks' lineup features a blend of experience and youth, with Porthen set to join forces with seasoned players like Ox Nche and Malcolm Marx in the front row. Meanwhile, Cheslin Kolbe, typically seen on the wing, will make a rare start at fullback. Erasmus believes Kolbe's versatility and experience in the French Top 14 will add a creative spark to the backline.
With the team dynamics finely tuned and young talents ready to prove their mettle, the upcoming match promises to be a crucible of potential and performance, showcasing the future of Springbok rugby.
