On a historic Saturday at Loftus Versfeld, Rassie Erasmus will mark a significant milestone by coaching his 55th Test match for the Springboks, setting a new record for the most matches coached by an individual in this role. This achievement comes as South Africa faces Scotland, pushing Erasmus past the previous record held by Jake White. Erasmus first led the team between 2018 and 2019 and returned in 2024, continuing through to the present 2026 season.
During his tenure, Erasmus also served as the director of rugby, overseeing an additional 39 Test matches with Jacques Nienaber as head coach, bringing his total influence to 93 Tests. The teams under his guidance have enjoyed a robust win rate of 73.11% since 2018. Remarkably, since resuming his role as head coach, the Springboks have achieved an 85.7% win rate over the past two seasons, including the upcoming match against Scotland.
Mark Alexander, the president of SA Rugby, praised Erasmus’s impact, stating,
“Rassie understood his mandate from day one and implemented a strategy that truly transformed the way we play, the way we use our diversity as our strength and the way we drive social cohesion by using rugby as a vehicle. He galvanised all South Africans behind our team,”
adding that Erasmus has been a pivotal figure in not only enhancing team performance but also in fostering national unity through sport.Erasmus’s contributions have been formally recognized with the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold, reflecting his exceptional performance in sport. Rian Oberholzer, the CEO of SA Rugby, commented on his legacy, noting, “With largely the same playing personnel, he has masterminded the winning of two Rugby World Cups and established the team at the pinnacle of the sport.”
Despite the upcoming milestone, Erasmus remains focused on the immediate challenges, emphasizing the importance of the current game over personal accolades. He remarked,
“When players reach milestones we don’t talk about it in the build-up to matches and the same applies this week. It’s a nice thing to know but the most important and only thing this week is performing against a very dangerous Scotland team.”
The list of top five Springbok coaches by number of Tests now reads as follows: Rassie Erasmus leads with a 75.93% win rate, followed by Jake White and Heyneke Meyer, both with a 66.67% win rate. Peter de Villiers holds a 62.5% win rate, and Jacques Nienaber has a 69.23% win rate. This reshuffling highlights the dynamic and impactful coaching careers within South African rugby.
