In the latest rugby rumble, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus brushed off criticism from Matt Williams with a chuckle and a shrug. The former Scotland coach, known for not mincing words, recently took a jab at the Boks' previously favored 7-1 bench strategy, which he labeled as "against the spirit of the game" and even "discriminatory against backs." But it seems the tactic has fizzled out, much to Williams' delight.

On the DSPN podcast, Williams didn't hold back, celebrating the end of the Bomb Squad approach.

"The 7-1 bench has quietly died. Thank God. No one went to a wake, and no one is saying, ‘Isn’t that sad?’"

He praised the Springboks for playing "absolutely extraordinary rugby" and finally unleashing the "talent and athleticism" of their players.

However, the real spice came during Tuesday’s team announcement when Erasmus responded to Williams' backhanded compliments. The Springbok coach conveyed a mix of amusement and indifference.

"In our team, I don’t think any of our players or management take him seriously, with all respect. He’s an elderly person who has been around the block and I’m sure a lot of people have a lot of respect for him."

Erasmus suggested that Williams' critiques might just be a ploy to attract clicks rather than genuine sports analysis. "How we see it is they’re using him as clickbait. We don’t comment on other teams and what their team selection has been like and how they play or combine their teams," he added, before capping off his remarks with a dismissive, "We hear it, but we laugh at it."

It's clear that while Williams' opinions stir the pot, Erasmus and his squad are more focused on the game ahead rather than dwelling on the critiques of yesteryears' strategies. As the rugby world watches, one thing is certain: the Springboks continue to evolve, leaving past controversies on the bench.
