From roofing to rugby greatness—Kyle Preston's leap from a tradesman's life to an electrifying All Blacks debut is nothing short of cinematic. Just last year, Preston was laying tiles and shingles; fast forward to last Saturday, and he's tearing up the field at Eden Park against the formidable Springboks, celebrating a 24-17 victory in the Rugby Championship.

The scrum-half, who turned 26 on the day of his second Test match in Wellington, his hometown, has had a whirlwind year. After hanging up his roofing belt in March 2024, Preston quickly ascended through the ranks, impressing with Wellington in the NPC, which catapulted him into a Super Rugby contract with the Crusaders. His performances there, notably a crucial role in the title decider against the Chiefs, paved his way to the national team.

An injury to Cortez Ratima opened the All Blacks door for Preston, who entered last week’s match with New Zealand leading 24-10. Surrounded by 19 of his family and friends, his debut was tense and thrilling, culminating in a narrow victory as the game went down to the wire.

"What a story that is. It’s a little movie, isn’t it, just for him to come in,"

remarked All Blacks coach Scott Robertson, emphasizing the fairy tale nature of Preston’s rise.

Preston shared in an interview how moving it was to see videos from his former roofing colleagues cheering him on, a testament to his hard-fought journey to professional rugby.

"Great for him… He stayed in the fight to be a professional player, and he went out and did a job for us. Great for him,"

Robertson added, highlighting the grit and perseverance Preston demonstrated.

Reflecting on his rapid ascent, Preston admitted the transition was intense. "It’s hard; you don’t get too much time to reflect because it’s all go, go, go," he said. Despite the pressures, his story is a potent reminder that determination and opportunity can lead to extraordinary outcomes, even when they seem as improbable as a roofer turning into an All Black overnight.

As the All Blacks prepare for another showdown with the Springboks, Preston's story is not just inspiring—it's a vivid illustration of how the paths to rugby stardom can be as varied and unpredictable as the game itself.
