Rookie Flyhalf Leads Springboks Against Wales

In a move signaling both confidence and strategy, Rassie Erasmus has introduced four debutants to the Springbok squad for their upcoming Nations Championship battle against Wales, taking place this Saturday at Kings Park. The new players stepping onto the international stage are Jaco Williams on the right wing, Vusi Moyo as flyhalf, Ruben van Heerden in the lock position, and Carlü Sadie at tighthead prop, thus fortifying an already formidable lineup for the undefeated Boks in their third game of the series.

Both Sharks talents, Moyo and Williams, will be making their international debuts on familiar grounds. They are joined by Van Heerden, who recently transitioned from the Stormers to a French club, and Sadie, currently playing for the Investec Champions Cup victors, Bordeaux Bègles. In the backline, Moyo will don the crucial No. 10 jersey, coordinating with veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, while Williams will showcase his pace alongside Kurt-Lee Arendse and fullback Aphelele Fassi. The midfield will feature the robust pairing of two-time World Cup winners, Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel.

On the forward front, Sadie will anchor the scrum with Gerhard Steenekamp and Malcolm Marx. The line-up is further supported by Van Heerden and Cobus Wiese as the key second-row partners while the loose trio will consist of Paul de Villiers, Jasper Wiese, and the captain, Pieter-Steph du Toit.

"Bringing in fresh talent for such a significant match underscores our strategy to blend experience with new, dynamic players. It’s essential for our growth and readiness for the World Cup," Erasmus explained.

On the bench, André-Hugo Venter, potentially earning his second cap, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, and Wilco Louw provide front-row options. The forward reserves are rounded out by Ben-Jason Dixon and Marco van Staden. The backline reinforcements include World Cup veteran Herschel Jantjies, who makes a notable return to the national squad after last appearing against Argentina in 2023, along with Manie Libbok and Damian Willemse.

The team will be without several key players like Eben Etzebeth, Franco Mostert, André Esterhuizen, Canan Moodie, Handré Pollard, and Ox Nché, who are all on the injury list, steadily working towards recovery.
