Russell Returns, Schoeman Starts for Scotland

Coach Gregor Townsend has announced three strategic changes to the Scotland starting lineup for the upcoming Nations Championship match against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld this Saturday. Finn Russell is set to make a comeback as the starting fly-half after a brief hiatus due to a calf injury. The pack sees Zander Fagerson stepping in as tighthead prop and Gregor Brown joining as lock, both promoted from their impactful performances off the bench in last week’s triumph over Argentina.

These adjustments were necessitated by Elliot Millar-Mills' tour-ending injury last week in Córdoba. Pierre Schoeman, who marked his 50th cap with a try, will continue to anchor the front row alongside Ewan Ashman. The back row remains unchanged, featuring Matt Fagerson, Rory Darge—who led the defensive efforts with 24 tackles against Los Pumas—and Jack Dempsey.

In the backs, Ben White will partner with Russell at halfback, while Rory Hutchinson, who also scored last week, will continue his role at outside centre alongside captain Sione Tuipulotu. The Glasgow Warriors trio of Kyle Steyn, Jamie Dobie, and Kyle Rowe will form the back three.

Townsend has opted for a six-two split on the bench, where loosehead prop Rory Sutherland is poised to earn his 50th cap. Hooker Gregor Hiddleston, after a memorable debut last week, remains among the substitutes alongside lock Alex Samuel. Flyhalf Tom Jordan will move to the bench this week, making room for fresh legs with prop Will Hurd, loose forwards Josh Bayliss and Magnus Bradbury, and centre Stafford McDowall all set to make their first appearances in this year’s championship.

"Finn's return is timely and vital for our game plan against the Springboks. His vision and experience will be pivotal,"

stated Townsend, emphasizing the strategic importance of Russell’s return.

"The boys showed great character last week, and we aim to carry that momentum into this challenging fixture,"

added Captain Sione Tuipulotu, highlighting the team's resilience.

Scotland’s team for the match is as follows:

Starting XV: 15 Kyle Rowe, 14 Kyle Steyn, 13 Rory Hutchinson, 12 Sione Tuipulotu (c), 11 Jamie Dobie, 10 Finn Russell, 9 Ben White, 8 Jack Dempsey, 7 Rory Darge, 6 Matt Fagerson, 5 Scott Cummings, 4 Gregor Brown, 3 Zander Fagerson, 2 Ewan Ashman, 1 Pierre Schoeman.

Bench: 16 Gregor Hiddleston, 17 Rory Sutherland, 18 Will Hurd, 19 Alex Samuel, 20 Josh Bayliss, 21 Magnus Bradbury, 22 Tom Jordan, 23 Stafford McDowall.
