Darry, who had just learned of his position in the lineup earlier this week, expressed his initial surprise at the selection.
"I didn’t really have any heads-up, so it was a bit of a surprise at first. But staying ready and on top of the detail meant that when the opportunity came, I was ready for it."
Darry credits his preparedness to playing in midweek tour matches, which kept him primed rather than sidelined. The All Blacks culture of maintaining constant readiness has clearly paid dividends for the young lock.

"It’s about making it as easy as possible for the hooker, trusting the lineout caller, and once the call is made, moving with speed and getting in the air. We talk a lot about the lift and jump being world-class. It’s very tough for the hooker if we’re not doing that. For us, it’s about controlling what we can, trusting the caller, and then executing."
Darry is also honing in on exit strategies to counter South Africa’s strategic kicking, which had previously put the All Blacks under pressure. Tweaks have been made to adapt to the varied kicking attacks, ensuring better positional play in response to different scenarios.
