As the dust settles on the recent majority acquisition of the Scarlets by House of Luxury Group (HOL), the new chiefs at the helm have made it crystal clear: merging with Ospreys isn't even on the radar. This revelation comes amidst swirling rumors of a potential consolidation in Welsh rugby, aimed at reducing the number of professional teams.

Last Friday marked a significant shift for the struggling Scarlets with HOL stepping in to take the reins, pending a review by the Welsh Rugby Union. Simon Kozlowski, HOL’s Chief Experience Officer, laid out the company’s vision in no uncertain terms during a candid chat on BBC Radio Wales. Despite the financial turmoil engulfing the regional rugby scene, Kozlowski is optimistic about the club’s future under their guidance.

"Honestly, no,"

Kozlowski responded when probed about the possibility of merging with the Ospreys.

"We just really haven’t given much thought and energy to a merger situation because in terms of plan A, B, C, and D, it is probably at the lower end of the alphabet for us."

While the Ospreys have secured planning permission for redevelopment at St Helen’s and aim to relocate by the end of 2025, the focus for HOL remains solely on revitalizing the Scarlets.

"We are the new meat on the chopping board here, so we are going to have to have some conversations with the various stakeholders. But for now, we haven’t even gotten to thinking about mergers. That’s so low on our wish list and desire list. You are going to need some very persuasive people with some very elegant words to bring us onside with that one."

Kozlowski likened HOL’s bold move to historical market strategies where the greatest opportunities often arise from the most dire circumstances.

"We tend to go where there is blood on the streets because we think that is an opportunity for the most positive social change," he explained. This approach underscores their commitment to not just salvage but significantly enhance the value of Welsh rugby and its impact on local communities.

In an era where Welsh rugby faces undeniable challenges, HOL positions itself not just as an investor but a beacon of hope, stepping into the fray when others have stepped back. Their arrival could indeed herald a new chapter for the Scarlets, one where resilience and revival are key themes on the path to redemption.
