Former Stormers and Springbok hooker Scarra Ntubeni has issued a rallying cry to South Africa's emerging rugby talents, presenting them with what he describes as a prime opportunity to test their mettle against the legendary All Blacks. Speaking at a recent Klipdrift event, Ntubeni enthused about the prospect of clashing with New Zealand's finest during the upcoming Greatest Rivalry tour.
"If I had this opportunity, I wouldn't be here, I would be in the gym now,” declared Ntubeni. His excitement palpable, he continued, “It’s what dreams are made of. As a kid, when you play rugby, what do you want to do? Play against the All Blacks, face the Haka."
"Never think that because you’re playing the All Blacks that they’re untouchable."
The much-anticipated tour will kick off with the Stormers facing New Zealand's formidable teams starting on August 7 at the Cape Town Stadium. This event marks a significant occasion for the franchise players, especially given the limited interactions with New Zealand teams since South Africa's exit from Super Rugby. “I think this will be a great opportunity not just for the Springboks, but also for the franchises. SA Rugby and New Zealand have pulled off something massive,” Ntubeni explained.
Amid this competitive backdrop, Ntubeni has a special message for the younger players stepping onto the field: “I want them to absorb it, inhale it and say, ‘I want to do this more. I want to stay on top. I want to beat these guys.’” His words not only challenge the players but also dismantle the aura of invincibility often associated with the All Blacks.
As the anticipation builds, the message from former greats like Ntubeni is clear: seize the moment, embrace the challenge, and dare to dream big against one of rugby's most iconic teams.
