Starting the 2026-27 URC season with a win, Phepsi Buthelezi expressed his satisfaction with the Sharks' performance, while eyeing the upcoming bout against Leinster as the ultimate test. The team is coming off a robust 41-24 victory against the Ospreys and is currently placed second on the table.
Under the leadership of JP Pietersen, who took over permanently in February, the Sharks are keen to build on last season’s 10th place finish. Buthelezi highlighted that the game against Leinster will be a critical indicator of their development.
"We’ve worked hard during our pre-season, and to get off the mark in the way that we did was really rewarding for the group," the 27-year-old told reporters on Tuesday.
The Sharks' captain pointed out that despite the pleasing start, there were moments in the game where the team felt they could have improved. He emphasized the importance of the tough and transparent discussions the team has engaged in, especially the loose forwards, who are eager to prove their mettle against the defending champions.
With an eye on the present, Buthelezi noted that this week’s preparations are crucial. “As a player, you obviously want to be up against the best. We want to play against the best loosies Leinster have to offer, and we’ve got to match fire with fire. We really feel we’ve been well prepared,” he added, confident in the coaching and strategies laid out for them.
Contributions from Skipper Nick Hatton and flanker Manu Tshituka, who scored two of the team's five tries in the previous game, have been significant. Buthelezi also acknowledged the offensive efforts and the impact of Scott Mathie’s return to the team.
"As a loose forward, it’s always nice to get involved with the ball and score some amazing tries," he observed.
