Durban's Sharks have secured a massive addition to their team roster for the upcoming season, inking a deal with All Blacks icon Ma’a Nonu. JP Pietersen, the head coach, has brought his former teammate on board not just for his play on the field, but to guide the team's younger talent.
Nonu will serve primarily in a mentorship capacity focusing on nurturing the skills of Sharks' promising outside backs including Jurenzo Julius, Jaco Williams, and Zekhethelo Siyaya. Yet, the seasoned centre, at 44, is still up for selection, ready to step onto the field whenever necessary.
"Having Ma’a join us is not just about what he can do in play, but also about his impact in our training environment. His experience is invaluable," said Pietersen.
With a wealth of experience, including winning the World Cup in 2011 and 2015 and amassing over 100 caps for New Zealand, Nonu's role will also cover for André Esterhuizen when he is on Springbok duty. Nonu’s robust playing style is considered a close match to the physicality brought by the team captain himself.
Nonu's relationship with Pietersen stretches back to their days at Toulon and their numerous face-offs in international and club matches. This history is expected to enrich their collaboration at Sharks. Over his illustrious career, Nonu has also played for major teams such as the Blues, Highlanders, and Hurricanes, with stints in Tokyo and San Diego, adding a global perspective to his rugby resume.
Just this year, Nonu faced off against the Stormers representing Toulon, demonstrating his ongoing competitiveness and skill on the international rugby stage. His continuous involvement in high-level play ensures he brings current insights and strategies to the Sharks' playbook.
This strategic signing is aimed at bolstering the Sharks’ capabilities on the field while enhancing the skill set of their burgeoning stars, preparing them for more significant challenges ahead.
