Sharks Rugby Club Bold Rebranding Unveiled
The Sharks rugby club has embraced a new era, unveiling a rebranding initiative that includes new logos and an official name change to ‘Sharks Rugby Club’. As they gear up for the 2026/27 United Rugby Championship season, these changes symbolize a significant leap into the future while honoring the club’s storied past.

The rebranding effort introduces two logos; one with the acronym ‘SRC’ and another featuring a stylized shark, which is a departure from the previous logo where the shark clutched a rugby ball. This marks a modern twist on the club’s visual identity.

“For 30 years, generations of players have worn the Black and White with pride, and generations of supporters have built memories around a badge that came to represent far more than a rugby team. Today, the Sharks begin the next chapter of that story,” the club stated. They emphasize that this evolution is not about replacing their history but building on it.

Shaun Bryans, the CEO of Sharks Rugby Club, reinforced the idea that while the club's emblem has evolved, its core values and essence remain steadfast. “Our badge has evolved. Our core never will,” he declared.

"Innovation has always been part of who we are. In 1996, this club had the courage to redefine itself as the Sharks and helped shape the modern era of South African rugby. We embraced transformation, pioneered new ways of engaging supporters and consistently chose to lead rather than follow. This evolution is not a departure from that tradition; it is its continuation."

The leadership of the Sharks cites the transformation from Natal Rugby into the Sharks in 1996 as a pivotal moment that exemplifies their forward-thinking approach. The team's leadership under JP Pietersen, a stalwart figure within the club, is viewed as a critical alignment in furthering their long-term ambitions.

“This is not change for change’s sake,” Bryans explained. He views the rebranding as a deliberate statement of ambition, aiming to position the Sharks as leaders on the field, in commercial ventures, and in cultural impact.

The club sees itself as a pioneer, a sentiment echoed by its commitment to adapt and evolve. “Professional sport has changed dramatically over the past three decades, and the world’s leading clubs increasingly succeed because they combine excellence on the field with strength off it,” the club noted. They are focused on building larger fan communities, attracting commercial partners, and creating top-tier supporter experiences.

Michael Leslie, Chief Growth Officer, spoke on the necessity of keeping up with the evolving landscape of professional sports. “Success today depends on far more than winning matches,” he stated. The club believes in creating new opportunities for engagement and growth that will sustain their competitive edge and support their players and facilities extensively.

“The greatest threat to a proud club is not evolution. It is standing still while the world changes around it,” the club concluded, echoing a sentiment that drives their current rebranding efforts. By staying dynamic and proactive, they aim to ensure their legacy and success for many more years to come.
