Phepsi Buthelezi, the fierce flanker of the Sharks, is all fired up and ready to lead his team into a redemption match against the Dragons this coming Friday in Newport. After a disappointing show in Glasgow, where the Sharks were outplayed 35-19 by the local team despite flashing signs of brilliance early on, Buthelezi and his crew are itching to prove themselves.
The Sharks' earlier sparkle was snuffed out by a cocktail of poor discipline and dubious decision-making. Buthelezi, reflecting on the loss, emphasized the need to bounce back hard.
"It’s really simple. We want people to see a proud and desperate Sharks team that’s going to go out there, work hard for one another, and restore pride back into the jersey,”
he declared.Buthelezi confessed that the team had lost its structure under the heavy pressure from Glasgow's formidable pack. "There’s nothing wrong with our system. When we move away from it, we scramble and look for desperate actions. At this level, when a team is close to your tryline, actions like that get punished," he explained, hopeful that the week's intense training would pay dividends in the upcoming match.
Decision-making snafus and an inclination to overplay were also highlighted by Buthelezi as key downfalls. "We drowned ourselves a bit. We thought we overplayed in certain areas, and that’s what Glasgow are good at. They forced us into conceding penalties and pinning us back in our half. That’s definitely one of the things we want to improve," he noted.
The upcoming face-off with the Dragons poses a different sort of challenge, with the Newport squad boasting a larger, more physical pack. Buthelezi has sized up the opposition, who despite a heavy loss to Ulster, showcased their grit. "They’re a proud team and with a new coach and around 40 new players, they’re a completely different side," he assessed.
As the Sharks gear up to make a statement on the field, the question remains: can they channel their desperation into a disciplined, powerful performance that restores their pride? Friday's clash in Newport will tell.
