In a recent shake-up that's set the French Pro D2 rugby scene abuzz, former Springbok powerhouse Gurthrö Steenkamp has taken over the reins as head coach of Béziers-Hérault. At 44, the ex-prop, known for his formidable presence on the field, steps into the shoes of David Irazoqui, charting a new course for the club with a three-year contract in hand.
Steenkamp, whose playing days spanned prestigious stints at Toulouse and Stade Français, transitioned into a coaching role that saw him spearheading La Rochelle's scrum tactics to Champions Cup victories in consecutive seasons, 2021-22 and 2022-23. His dual role there also included mentoring the forward pack of the club's espoirs team, honing young talents for the rigors of top-tier rugby.
The appointment has been met with enthusiasm, particularly from club president and former teammate, Bob Skinstad, who has firsthand experience of Steenkamp's calibre both as a player and a coach. Skinstad expressed his confidence in Steenkamp’s abilities to propel the team forward.
"Gurthrö Steenkamp’s arrival is a great piece of news for the club. Having played by his side and against him, I can say that he is talented and a very demanding individual, and is also a great human."
Skinstad continued, emphasizing the strategic advantage Steenkamp brings to the table: "His vast experience as a top level player and coach will be key to help the club progress and achieve its goals."
With Steenkamp at the helm, Béziers-Hérault fans are likely bracing for an era of rigorous discipline and strategic finesse, hopeful that this new chapter will lead them to greater heights in the competitive landscape of French rugby.
