It seems the English Premiership might as well be dubbed the South African Premiership, given the number of South African players peppering the teams this season. With the competition set to kick off in a little over a month, the infusion of South African talent is more visible than ever, with nearly every team sporting some serious Springbok power.
Take Bath, for instance. Not only are they the reigning champs looking to prove last season's triumph was not a fluke, but they're also under the guidance of former Springbok assistant Johann van Graan. Anchoring the scrum is none other than Bok prop Thomas du Toit, surrounded by a veritable who’s who of South African rugby, including Quin Roux and Jaco Coetzee.
Meanwhile, over at Bristol Bears, they’re making headlines with the signing of Welsh NFL hopeful Louis Rees-Zammit, but they’ve also got Benhard Janse van Rensburg, a utility back who’s been turning heads since his arrival from the Cheetahs in 2021. Not to be outdone, Exeter Chiefs have bagged Springbok hooker Joseph Dweba, bolstering their hooking options immensely.
Gloucester has roped in Sharks flanker James Venter to beef up their back row, and Harlequins' South African contingent is led by Tyrone Green, who’s already a fan favorite and a fixture at fullback.
"I feel right at home here, and I’m just aiming to keep improving each game,"
said Green, reflecting on his successful stint thus far.The newly rebranded Newcastle Red Bulls aren’t holding back either. They’ve snagged former Blue Bulls flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain, who’s set to bring his A-game to the Premiership. And let’s not forget Leicester Tigers’ Hanro Liebenberg, who’s now practically part of the furniture with his dependable performances week in, week out.
Down at Northampton Saints, JJ van der Mescht is the new kid on the block, ready to make his mark alongside England’s Alex Coles. Sale Sharks, ever the South African stronghold, continue to feature the likes of the du Preez brothers and Jacques Vermeulen, who’s just made the switch from Exeter.
Last but not least, Saracens' Ivan van Zyl, now a centurion for the club, is looking to keep adding to his impressive tally after helping his team clinch the title back in 2023. With so much talent from the southern hemisphere, this season of the English Premiership is shaping up to be a cracker.
