In the latest shake-up of the Springboks' lineup, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, the young fly-half, steps into a role previously filled by veterans, drawing comparisons to England's Marcus Smith—a parallel that raises eyebrows and concerns. Robbie Fleck, former Springbok and coach, questions the wisdom of this backline reshuffle, particularly ahead of a critical second Test against the All Blacks.

Fleck aired his reservations on the Boks Uncapped podcast, lamenting the lack of seasoned partnerships within the team. "It's too many changes from my side; there are no solid combinations that have had time together," he expressed. He highlighted the challenges of a young backline facing the seasoned All Blacks, noting, "Nice players, exciting players, but from a defensive situation with Sacha, Damian Willemse, and Canan Moodie, that’s a brand new combination in the midfield. It put them under serious pressure; the All Blacks are going to pick that up and they’re going to have a proper crack at them."

"From a game management perspective, they are going to look to Sacha for game control. Now, he hasn’t really been the guy doing that; he’s a brilliant individual rugby player, and we all know his ceiling is so high. But why was Pollard brought back in? He was brought back in to drive the team forward, get the forward pack going forward, kicking game, putting it in the corners."

Fleck also drew parallels between Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Marcus Smith, noting a tendency towards individual play that could be detrimental in high-stakes matches. "Sacha is a little bit more individualistic, like a Marcus Smith, which is a big concern," Fleck pointed out. Despite these concerns, he acknowledged that Feinberg-Mngomezulu did show promise off the bench during the clash at Eden Park, providing better direction after Pollard struggled with the game's pressure.

The upcoming game will also see a reshuffled back row, where Fleck feels more optimistic. "What they have got right is the loose trio combination, and that’s massive with Jasper Wiese back," he added. This blend of youthful exuberance and strategic tweaks will be pivotal as the Springboks confront one of their toughest challenges yet.

With a backline featuring Cobus Reinach at scrumhalf, Damian Willemse at inside centre, and Canan Moodie alongside Ethan Hooker and Aphelele Fassi in the wider positions, the Springboks are poised for an explosive, albeit risky, confrontation. As these players gear up for the clash at Sky Stadium in Wellington, all eyes will be on how this new configuration withstands the pressure of an expectant rugby world.
