As the Rugby Championship looms, the Springboks' recent performances are casting a long shadow of dominance over their rivals, according to former All Blacks forward James Parsons. South Africa, gearing up to defend their title, dispatched Italy and Georgia with ease during their mid-year series, showcasing a form that should worry their competitors.

While reflecting on the Springboks' impressive stats and gameplay, Parsons shared his insights on the Aotearoa Rugby Pod, noting the staggering difference in defensive metrics compared to other teams.

"If you look at all the other international sides, their dominant tackle stats are much higher defensively than anyone else, they have 15 per cent dominant tackles, which is really high."

He pointed out that this rate was significantly higher than that of other top international teams, who typically register less than three percent in dominant tackles.

Parsons emphasized the impact of South Africa's physicality on their overall strategy. "It’s the basis of their game. The platform these game drivers are getting to play off is just immaculate," he remarked. The relentless pressure from the Springboks not only stifles opposition attacks but also paves the way for their playmakers to operate from advantageous positions.

The former All Black highlighted another critical aspect of South Africa's game—speed at the breakdown.

"Georgia had 14 per cent lightning quick ball, that is brutal, you cannot win any game of rugby, you can’t even win in club rugby with that."

This quick ball, combined with a formidable defensive effort that includes turning over the ball and wearing down opponents, significantly enhances the Springboks' attack.

The depth in the South African squad is another factor that Parsons finds intimidating. Under the guidance of head coach Rassie Erasmus, the team has developed a robust bench strength that seems unrivaled at the moment. "I feel like every position’s got so many options. They’ve got a depth and confidence throughout their squad like no other at the moment," Parsons admitted. He concluded that regardless of who the Springboks field, the team’s performance remains consistently high, making them the team to beat in the upcoming championship.
