The Springboks have kicked off their Rugby Championship prep in Jo'burg with a bang, with coach Rassie Erasmus singing praises about the team's mental and physical leaps during a grueling first week. "We are pleased with the strides made and the mind-shift the players made for what will be a completely different contest against Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina," Erasmus shared, setting the tone for a fierce series of upcoming battles.
With the Wallabies set to clash with the Boks in back-to-back Tests next month, first at Ellis Park and then in Cape Town, the squad's focus is razor-sharp. The action doesn't stop there, as they will then square off against the All Blacks in New Zealand, followed by matches against Argentina in Durban and London.
Erasmus emphasized the importance of this week's camp, focusing on beefing up fitness and syncing minds to confront the unique challenges posed by their southern hemisphere rivals. "The teams we will face in the next few months will ask different questions and pose different challenges," he noted, highlighting the strategic adjustments necessary for each opponent.
"We had an intense week of conditioning to get the players ready for what will undoubtedly be a challenging Castle Lager Rugby Championship campaign"
The initial phase of training wasn't just sweat and grind; it included a mix of gym sessions, fieldwork, and tactical pow-wows. After this intense period, players will catch a brief respite before regrouping for the second phase of their grueling prep schedule.
"We laid a good foundation this week, and next week we will zone more into what we expect from Australia and start developing plans to counter what we expect from them," Erasmus elaborated. With the Wallabies showing their mettle against the British & Irish Lions last week, the Boks are under no illusions about the tough competition awaiting them on home turf.
As the reigning champs and the world's top-ranked team, the South Africans are not resting on their laurels. Erasmus pointed out, "We identified a few key areas of our game that we needed to improve after the incoming series, and we incorporated those into our training blocks this week." It's clear that for the Boks, it's all about honing in on each threat, one game at a time.
