Putt, who has deep ties with South African rugby, pointed to the broad talent base and strategic player management as key factors that can drive the Boks to greater heights. He was adamant that the team has not hit its limit yet.
"I don’t think there’s potentially a limit on how much better the Springboks can get in terms of where they’re going,"
He highlighted the role of Rassie Erasmus in extending the careers of star players by managing their playing time effectively, using Malcolm Marx as a prime example.
"Marx has probably increased his salary three times over the period of time. He’s still known as the world’s best, and he’s playing probably 50-60% of the rugby."
However, Wilson countered this optimism by pointing to Erasmus' selections in the final matches of the series, suggesting that the coach has found his optimal squad.
Wilson argued that South Africa’s depth, while impressive, has reached a point where few outside the current squad can make a substantial impact.
"They are the team to beat, like we [the All Blacks] were going into 2015. But they’re not unbeatable. I think they’re close to their ceiling. Their ceiling is really good. They are an outstanding team. I don’t know how much better they can get," he stated.
Undeterred, Putt noted the emergence of young talent in the squad, which, combined with Erasmus’ newfound tactical freedoms following their series victory, suggests that the ceiling is far from being reached.
"I don’t see that as a ceiling," Putt insisted, highlighting the youth and potential still to be fully tapped within the team.
Wilson was skeptical about the prospects of even high-profile players making a return to the starting lineup under the current regime, doubting the chances of seeing Handré Pollard in major matches again.
"He’s no doubt found some new talent, but I don’t think it’s significantly better than what’s out there. You can only have 15 on the paddock. What they do have is insurance like no other team right now," Wilson added.
