The Springboks squad, consisting of 26 players, touched down back in South Africa early this week. After a victorious but tough match against Los Pumas in Argentina, where they secured a 17-10 win, the team focused on recovery. This preparation phase was crucial to realign the team both physically and mentally for the battles ahead.
Training resumed intensively with sessions on Friday and Saturday. Erasmus has then awarded his players a brief respite, a strategic day and a half off, to recharge before the series kicks off at Ellis Park. The subsequent matches will be held at Cape Town Stadium, FNB Stadium, and finally, M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
"It was important to manage the players who travelled to Argentina well and afford them sufficient time to recover from the match and switch back into the domestic time zone, which is why we only started training as a full group late in the week," said Erasmus.
"But we are pleased that the players are well recovered and ready to give everything for the forthcoming Tests against the All Blacks. It will undoubtedly be a very challenging tournament, but we are looking forward to it as a collective."
To bolster the team's readiness, Bok hooker Johan Grobbelaar and utility forward Elrigh Louw have had a stint with the Vodacom Bulls against the All Blacks. They are scheduled to rejoin the national squad right after.
This colloquial series is comparable to the knockout stages of a World Cup, pitting the Boks against one of the world's most formidable teams week after week. The challenge is enormous, but Erasmus and his coaching staff have meticulously been fine-tuning the team’s strategy and performance areas for these decisive encounters.
"This series is almost like playing the knockout stages of a World Cup because we are facing one of the world’s best week in and week out, and we all understand the magnitude of the series. It’s a new and exciting challenge, and we have been putting in a lot of work behind the scenes, especially the group of coaches and players who remained behind in South Africa in the last two weeks," explained Erasmus.
"We will finetune the areas of our game, which we would like to improve next week as we get ready to take the field," he concluded, setting the stage for what promises to be an epic showdown in international rugby.
